  • square
  • tape measure
  • panel saw, tenon saw
  • claw hammer
  • chisel and mallet
  • jack plane/smoothing plane
  • hand drill

Timber equipment

  • bench vice
  • g cramp
  • sash cramp

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1
Identify tools to construct timber components (e.g. rule, different types of square, saw).
  • 1.2
Identify equipment to construct timber components (e.g. bench vice, different types of cramp).

2

Be able to mark out a component.

Marking out timber

  • know how to identify

                              -  face side

                              -  face edge

  • mark out timber to a tolerance

                             -  length

                              - width

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1
Identify face side and face edge.
  • 2.2
Mark out as required to within 2mm of given size.

3

Be able to use tools to construct timber components.

Using tools safely

  • use of a panel saw
  • use of a tenon saw
  • adjustments to a jack plane
  • demonstrate use of planning timber to marked dimensions
  • use and setting up of a hand drill
  • driving nails in timber correctly

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1
Use correct techniques for key tools when constructing timber components.
  • 3.2
Use a tenon saw for cross cutting.
  • 3.3
Adjust a plane ready for use.
  • 3.4
    Use a hand plane
    a) for face and edging
    b) to plane to the marked dimension
    c) to form chamfers.
  • 3.5
Set up a hand drill in conjunction with a drill bit.
  • 3.6
Drill a hole in a piece of timber.
  • 3.7
Use a hammer to drive a nail into timber and to extract a nail from timber.

4

Be able to clear a work area following construction of timber components.

Storage and Maintenance of Tools
