Aim

The aim of this unit is to consider what support a new parent may need and how they can access it. Learners are encouraged to gather information in their local area.

Unit Learning Outcomes

Know the support needs of new parents.

New parents may need support in some of the following areas:

  • physical care of the child e.g. washing, feeding etc
  • knowing if their child is ill and what to do 
  • choosing childcare provision
  • financial support

Learners can then identify possible questions that parents may ask around chosen areas.

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

    Identify key areas in which new parents may need support.

  • 1.2

    Identify some common examples of queries raised by new parents.

Know the support available for new parents.

Learners need to research services that are available to parents including on-line resources. They may be able to access this information via the internet, visiting local organisations and the library, talking with experienced parents, own experience. The learner should then go on to identify the type of support available.

  • 2.1

    Identify services available in own area to support new parents.

  • 2.2

    Identify on-line resources available to support new parents (e.g. NHS helpline).

  • 2.3

    Outline the type of support provided by different sources.

Know how new parents can access support.

Learners need to consider how to access different types of support. Examples may include:



  • relevant personnel in the local health centre
  • nursery practitioners or school teachers
  • local newspapers
  • local advertisements
  • local council offices
