Unit Learning Outcomes

1.

Understand the role of cell organelles.

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

Describe the structure and functions of cell organelles as seen using an electron microscope.

2.

Be able to appreciate the biochemical basis of life.

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

Describe the chemical structures of carbohydrate, protein, lipid and nucleic acid molecules using chemical drawings, including reference to monomers and polymers.

  • 2.2

Explain the functions of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids in living organisms.

3.

Understand the mode of action of enzymes.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

Compare and contrast two models of enzyme action.

  • 3.2

Explain the effects of factors on the rate of reaction of an enzyme controlled reaction.

For example one or more of: temperature, pH, substrate concentration, enzyme concentration or action of inhibitors.

4.

Be able to appreciate how substances move in and out of cells.

Assessment Criteria

  • 4.1

Compare and contrast the processes of diffusion, facilitated diffusion, osmosis and active transport.

  • 4.2

Explain the importance of these processes in living organisms.
