Aim

The purpose of the unit is to equip students with the underlying study skills necessary for study at Higher Education. Students will develop effective time management and organisational skills.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.

Understand how to plan and manage time effectively.

Time management techniques and how to use them. E.g. Pomodoro technique, Time blocking, Eisenhower method.

Developing weekly schedules using digital or physical resources.

Assessment Criteria

    Evaluate three time management techniques to plan for study.

    Develop own personal time management schedule.

  • 1.3

    Evaluate own personal time management schedule.


2.

Understand how to organise notes and resources for learning.

Creating a filing system: Organising work on computer drives, clouds and/or in physical files, Naming and colour coding files/resources.

Establishing good organisational habits- styles of organisation (Cena, 2020) applied to physical and digital desktop and filing:

Everything Out (leaving things out in the open as visual reminders).

Nothing Out (equate a clear surface or desktop with a clear and organised mind).

Saver (everything might come in handy someday).

Minimalist (only having essentials).

Straightener (straight lines and tidy piles).

No Rules (tend to look disorganised to others but know exactly where things are).

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

    Demonstrate physical or digital organisation of notes and resources.

  • 2.2

    Evaluate the effectiveness of the strategy in 2.1 and reflect on the importance of organisational skills.


3.

Understand own time management and organisational styles.

Linear and multi taskers, strengths and weaknesses.

Learning environments. Which creates the most distractions? Where do I study best?

Difficulties: procrastination, distractions, emotional blocks, sickness/ family crisis, stress, motivation.

    Identify own individual time management styles including the relative strengths and weaknesses.

  • 3.2

    Identify difficulties in time management and suggest solutions.

  • 3.3

    Identify own individual organisational styles including the relative strengths and weaknesses.
