Aim

The purpose of the unit is to enable students to research opportunities for progression to Higher Education. Specifically, the unit aims to enable learners to recognise the importance of identifying the right courses and the significance of work-related activities in relation to their own aspirations.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.

Be able to plan a Higher Education (HE) Application.

Students should be introduced to the UCAS application cycle and process and use the deadline parameters to plan for application submissions. It’s important for students to understand the importance of meeting the deadline.

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

Explain the information required, and its location, for effectively researching into opportunities for progression to HE.

  • 1.2

Identify the deadline for applications to chosen HEIs.

  • 1.3

Describe the implications of missing the deadlines identified in 1.2.

  • 1.4

Create an application to HE plan.

  • 1.5

    Evaluate the plan after use.

2.

Be able to recognise the range and variety of opportunities available in HE in relation to own aspirations.

Students should reflect on their own career aspirations and find relevant courses and institutions which offer the necessary progression opportunities to satisfy their career intentions.

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

Research information for four relevant HE institutions and/or courses.

  • 2.2

Rank the institutions and/or courses, with reasons, in relation to own aspirations.

3.

Be able to recognise the implications of following an HE course.

Students should be open and honest about the advantages and disadvantages of following an HE course. All aspects of one’s personal and professional life could be explored such as financial implications, social and family commitments etc.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

Evaluate the implications of following an HE course.

  • 3.2

Explain ways in which the implications may affect choice of university and final course selection.

4.

Understand the importance of work related activities to enhance progression to HE.

This learning outcome is an opportunity for students to understand the importance of any voluntary or paid work to the UCAS application. Students will need to demonstrate that they understand the progression requirements from a variety of higher education institutions and courses related to their career aspirations. Many vocationally orientated HE courses require evidence of experience working in the relevant field. This work experience, whether voluntary or paid, is often critical for successful selection for an interview.

Assessment Criteria

  • 4.1

Evaluate the importance of voluntary and paid work experience in improving opportunities for progression to HE.
