Understand the role and responsibilities of a coach.

Assessment Criteria

  • 1.1

    Critically compare the role of the coach with other forms of support (eg mentoring or counselling).

  • 1.2

    Summarise the values, attitudes, behaviours and skills required to offer effective coaching.

  • 1.3

    Explain the boundaries of the coaching role and how to act when these boundaries are reached.

  • 1.4

    Analyse the impact of relevant legislation, guidelines and organisational policies and procedures on coaching practice

  • 1.5

    Summarise one or more coaching models that they plan to apply in practice.

Be able to establish a coaching relationship.

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

    Create an environment in which effective coaching can take place.

  • 2.2

    Establish a rapport with the person being coached which enables open and honest discussion.

  • 2.3

    Create a coaching agreement with the input of the person being coached which addresses conduct, ground rules and confidentiality

Be able to provide coaching.

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

    Apply understanding of one or more models of coaching in own coaching practice.

  • 3.2

    Facilitate the person(s) being coached to:

    • explore goals and possible actions to achieve them

    • set goals and develop an action plan to achieve them.

  • 3.3

    Use appropriate techniques to support and challenge the person being coached including:

    • sharing examples of good practice

    • motivational techniques

    • offering constructive feedback

  • 3.4

    Use appropriate communication skills, including effective listening and questioning, to further the thinking of the person being coached

  • 3.5

    Support the person being coached to implement their action plan and to review progress and impact

Be able to maintain and conclude a coaching relationship.

  • 4.1

    Address effectively any issues and misunderstandings within a coaching relationship.

  • 4.2

    Bring a coaching relationship to a timely and positive end.

Be able to review own performance as a coach.

Assessment Criteria

  • 5.1

    Use reflective practice and feedback from others to analyse own effectiveness as a coach.

  • 5.2

    Summarise own strengths and areas for improvement, giving evidence of each from own coaching practice.

  • 5.3

    Explain how they can further develop their coaching skills and the likely impact of doing so on those they coach in the future
