Know safety and maintenance requirements for hand tools.

 Plumbing safety

  •  using sharp tools and cutters
  •  awareness of burrs on pipework
  •  care with cutting
  •  wearing PPE where required

Tools storage and maintenance

  •  storage of tools with carry bag or toolbox
  •  retention of knife blades in holder
  •  maintenance of pipe cutter wheels, replace if blunt
  •  maintenance of hacksaw blades

Be able to measure and mark out components.

 Plumbing measurement demonstrate use of

  •  metric and imperial measurements on a tape measure
  •  spirit level to ensure plumbing fittings are horizontally fixed in place
  •  use of a level for vertical components
  •  use of a laser level for transferring levels around an area
  •  marking for cutting
  •  marking for pipe clips
  •  marking for plumbing fittings

Assessment Criteria

  • 3.1

    Use appropriate units of measurement to measure and mark out components using

    a) tape measure

    b) spirit level

    c) laser level

    d) marking pen/pencil

Know how to plan and estimate material requirements for an installation.

Plumbing materials

  •  produce a requisition list for a range of plumbing tasks
  •  produce a method statement for a plumbing installation
  •  estimate the budget for a plumbing task for a client to include

Assessment Criteria

  • 4.1

    Identify materials required for given installations including pipework and fittings.

  • 4.2

    Describe the procedures for measuring given installations and recording pipe sizes and positions.

  • 4.3

    Produce a simple estimate of plumbing costs.

Plumbing working environments

  • protection of a clients area and surfaces whilst plumbing
  • cleaning down the working area
  • disposal of waste materials
  • handing over of instruction manuals and manufacturers data sheets for future reference

Assessment Criteria

  • 5.1

    Clean and store tools in line with safe practice.

  • 5.2

    During and following completion of task

    a) clean work area so that it is free from debris

    b) dispose of/recycle waste as appropriate.
