Aim

To develop knowledge and understanding of how use the use of herbal remedies has involved, the way herbal products are manufactured and the different benefits and cautions relating to the use of Holland & Barrett herbal products.

Unit Learning Outcomes

Understand how the use of herbal remedies has evolved.

Assessment Criteria

    Explain the origins of the major branches of herbal medicines. 

  • 1.2

    Evaluate the resurgence in the use of herbal remedies in the 20th/21st centuries.

Understand the ways herbal products are manufactured.

Assessment Criteria

  • 2.1

    Explain how and why common excipients are used in the manufacturing of herbal products. 

  • 2.2

    Discuss the differences between the use of concentrated extracts and the use of whole herbs in the manufacturing of herbal products and customer attitudes and preferences for the two different methods of manufacturing.

Understand the regulations that are in place to monitor use of herbal products.

    Explain the regulations relating to the licensing of herbal products for medicinal use.

    Explain how active ingredients in certain products may result in contra indications.

    Compare the side effects of certain herbal remedies to commonly used pharmaceutical drugs for similar everyday ailments.
