    The Gateway Qualifications Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment qualification provides an important foundation to Health and Safety for individuals working or intending to work within the Construction industry. The qualification covers risk assessment, working at height, manual handling, improving health and safety at work and the safe operation of equipment.

    The single mandatory unit in the Award has been based upon the National Occupational Standard COSVR641 (Conform to General Workplace Health, Safety and Welfare). From July 2014, achievement of the Gateway Qualifications Level 1 Award fulfils the mandatory training requirements for the new CSCS Labourer Green Card.

    The qualification is suitable for learners aged 16+ who require development of their knowledge and understanding of health and safety in a construction environment. Learners will gain the knowledge and skills to work safely and efficiently in their workplace. The qualification is also for individuals who wish to gain the CSCS Green Card, or for current Construction Site Operative cardholders seeking renewal.

    Progression may be into employment in a Construction role or to further learning. Gateway Qualifications offers a suite of Skills for Construction qualifications from Entry Level 3 to Level 1.

    Progression & entry requirements

    There is no requirement for learners to have achieved prior qualifications or units. Progression may be into employment in a Construction role or to further learning. Gateway Qualifications offers a suite of Skills for Construction qualifications from Entry Level 3 to Level 1. There is no requirement for learners to have prior skills, knowledge or understanding.

    We have pre-selected some of the most popular units used in short courses for adults and created a resource pack to support online, blended and face-to-face teaching and learning.

    Each pack contains:

    • Teacher Delivery Guide – This guide summarises the delivery of the units and helps provide a structured, blended approach to the delivery of the units for face-to-face, remote delivery, or a mixture of both. The teaching and learning activities included can be adapted to meet the diverse needs and profile of learners.
    • Learner Pack – This pack includes guidance for learning activities which will help learners to think about what they have been discussing with the teacher and the rest of the group. There are also assessment tasks which can be used as evidence for the qualification. Finally, there are checklists where learners can assess their own skills development and progress and record sheets for activities observed by the teacher.
    • Teacher Resource PowerPoint – a ready-to-deliver PowerPoint presentation for each unit, featuring videos and activities for learners, along with comprehensive notes for teaching staff.

    These resources are available free of charge to Centres approved with Gateway Qualifications. They can be downloaded from our Prism system and can be found on the “Documents” tab of the relevant qualification.
